Aloha from the UK!
I checked on the Internet provision for Honolulu, after I found it very
difficult (as a tourist) to get reasonable access to the Internet:
1. 88% of homes are connected to cable.
2. The rest are DSL or more rarely dial-up.
3. There are some wifi hotspots near the airport.
4. There are none in Waikiki, because the hotels want to do their own
network
5. Hawaii Telecom recently bought by Carlyle are planning something,
but who knows what.
6. If you want to use street furniture for wifi or WiMAX antennas the
City wants an arm and a leg to let you do it.
7. There's no real competition to cable because there's no wireless
Internet and hence they charge a premium for it.
8. There's no wireless internet because ....goto 1
If there were an opportunity to do community WiMAX, sharing DSL
bandwidth in return for complete freedom from wired internet access, do
you think Honoluluans would go for it?
