Verizon announces that it'll start rolling out fiber to the premises (FTTP)
in a new service called Fios. $35-$40 a month for a connection that maxes
at 5Mbps, and $45-$50 a month for one that maxes at 15Mbps. It's been a
long, LONG time since Bell Atlantic strung fiber past my folks' house back
east, so it's about time they got around to this... but I'm sure it'll be
years longer before they it shows up out here (aside from SIC maybe someday
following through on its promises).

If you were Carlyle, what would your strategy be for stemming the tide of POTS defections to wireless (and cable now that Oceanic
has announced VoIP)?
Would the "promise" of FTTx or Fios be a good carrot to gain regulatory approval of the buyout?

Just wondering myself...
